Rainbow Equine are proud to support the "Saddle Up" campaign
|
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop reliable treatments for paralysis caused by a broken back or neck. |
|
Every year more than 800 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord. Spinal Research raises money to fund research into clinical treatments as well as vital basic science research. Thanks to such pioneering research, paralysis can now be treated and we stand on the brink of applying therapies that will restore movement and feeling and transform the lives of paralysed people. |
We were competing at Osberton Horse Trials, when we had a misunderstanding about which way to go. He clipped his shoulder on a tree and I was thrown into it. I knew it was serious as I normally jump up after a fall, but this time I couldn't. I had broken my back and injured my spinal cord, resulting in paralysis." Claire Lomas Saddle Up Ambassador
Claire hasn't given up and is determined that she will walk and ride again. She has agreed to be the face of our major appeal called Stand and Be Counted and we need you to pledge your support too!
The BEF (British Equestrian Federation) and a number of Britain's top riders from all disciplines have given their support. The Stand and Be Counted photo shows just some of the riders who supporting us - Saddle Up Patron Ginny Elliot; Ambassadors Francis Whittington, Mary King and Andrew Gould and other top riders including Ellen Whittaker, Ben Maher and Nick Skelton.
Over 800 people a year are paralysed in the UK and too many of these are from horse riding accidents. Paralysis does not only mean being unable to walk, but depending on the part of the spinal cord that is injured it can cause loss of movement in arms and hands, the inability to breathe on your own and perhaps the worst of all, the loss of independence.
How can you Stand and Be Counted?
"During my eventing career I was very fortunate not to have a really serious accident. Sadly not everyone is as lucky as I was and failing to finish the course that day is the least of their problems. Some 800 people in the UK every year are left in a wheelchair, or worse. I decided to support Spinal Research to give paralysed people hope for the future - please get involved and do the same." Ginny Elliot MBE Saddle Up Patron
